I received a question from a customer about his computer printing blank documents from Microsoft Word. He knew that the printer worked as it is a networked HP printer that another user was able to use 2 days previous. He had tried multiple applications with the same results.
I didn't believe that this was the "same old issue" of having more than one page in a document, so I did a little searching while I worked my way through the settings in Word (Tools->Options and Print->Properties). I found the following article that ended up helping point me in the correct direction.
When I was able to sit at his computer, under his profile, I went through the following steps to troubleshoot his issue:
1. Successfully reproduced the issue of a Word document with legible, black text, producing a blank document at the printer.
2. Changed the color of the text to a dark red and then printed the same document successfully with the text in dark red.
3. Removed, inspected and reinserted the black cartridge in the printer.
4. Used the same document, changed the text back to black and was able to print without issue.
To be sure that the issue was resolved, I made sure to use several applications (Word, Notepad and IE to name three) and they all printed just fine.
On The Side
If you're curious about what I was referring to as the "same old issue" above, this is about the nicest article I could find that doesn't point a nasty finger at the end user. In short, this article explains how you can make sure that you do not have pages in your document that you do not want.
